Dolled up for valentine's day in a cruelty free fashion.

My first youtube tutorial using cruelty free products!  It was a bit of an eye opener, going through my makeup kit to find that I have very few cruelty free products, and by cruelty free, I mean brands who do not test on animals and who do not trade in China (where brands must test on animals by law).

This is an extremely tricky subject and one I have been researching for a few weeks now, everyone has a different idea of what cruelty free means to them and within that, there are many avenues to get lost down.  In brief, all products sold in the UK have not been tested on animals, which is great but the confusion comes when you look beyond this - MAC for example, trade in China, therfore at some point down the line, MAC test on animals.  Urban Decay do not sell in China (they thought about it briefly and then decided not to after customer uproar) but they are, however owned by Estee Lauder who are a parent company to many brands that do trade in China.  Because of this, a lot of people would not consider them cruelty free.

At this moment in time I am of the thinking that increasing the popularity of brands that don't trade in China will help to show bigger parent companies the demand for brands with better ethics.  I hope that the industry as a whole will change rather than segregate and eventually it will be against the law, all over the world, to test on animals.  I will do a dedicated blog post once I know more about such a huge subject.

The lack of foundation and brows info in this video is due to the fact that I literally had no cruelty free base or brow products in my whole pro makeup kit - pretty shocking.

Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden
Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Oil Slick (sparkly black)
NARS Audacious Mascara
NARS Laguna Bronzer
