Day to night makeup for busy mums.

Tuesday, 3 November 2015

I spend most of my week in mummy mode wearing hardly any makeup at all but when I've got the energy and the time, I like to slap on the basics if I can, purely because it makes me feel a little more put-together (and so I don't scare the locals).  The other day I had some mum buds to meet up with in the day for a chat and a cuppa while the kids hung out and that evening I also had some catch up drinks with a friend at No.1 Harbourside in Bristol.  I wanted to top up my day time makeup so I felt a tiny bit more glam and night time worthy and I needed it to be quick and fuss free so I thought I would blog about it incase any other mums (or busy people for that matter) wanted some ideas for quick day to night makeup.

If you've got to wear makeup all day and all night with a top up involved at some point and possibly some grubby toddler hands then prepping the skin is really important.  A great way to ensure an easy healthy glow is to pop on a facial self tanner like Clarins Liquid Bronze either the night before or the morning of, it just warms me up and helps to keep me looking a bit more awake and 'with it'.  Another great tip is to use an exfoliating mask like this Alpha H one, I throw some on after Ive cleansed my face in the morning and spend the ten minutes it needs to sit on my face to chase Charlie around the house and get him ready.  I find makeup won't sit as flawlessly on my face for an extended period of time if it doesn't start off as smooth as possible, so this step really helps.

Ive been enjoying the Rimmel Wake Me Up foundation and concealer recently so after some primer for the face and eyes - I like Porefessional by Benefit and Shadow Insurance by Too Faced - I apply a small amount, being careful not to cake it and finish with a light dust of translucent powder to set everything in place.

For the rest of the day time look, I like to get my brows looking full and groomed, currently with the Marc Jacobs Wow Brow, a good coating of Nars Audacious Mascara, some Laguna Bronzer on the high points of the face, Charlotte Tilbury's First Love Blusher and a blob of lip balm, at the moment I'm using Dr Paw Paw.  This is the maximum I tend to wear for a day out with Charlie and our friends, any more feels a bit too much and it usually all comes off when Charlie wipes both his muddy, wet hands down my face (common occurance).

When Im off out to be a grown up and drink wine its nice to have a bit more going on in the eye and lip department, mainly just because its an excuse to wear some proper makeup for a change!  What with usually running late - which I can now blame on my child - it needs to be speedy.  This time I opted for an Aqua Eyes Liner by Makeup Forever in Copper along the top lash line which I darkened up at the edges with Constructivist Paint Pot by MAC, this is a super long lasting combo and great for blue eyes.  I am really enjoying the Rimmel Exaggerate Lip Liner in Eastend Snob at the moment, it's  long-lasting and a really easy shade to wear, perfect for a relaxed evening drink!

A really quick and easy way to spruce up the hair is spraying in a bit of texture spray and getting your fingers in to mess it up and create a bit of volume, this takes two seconds and makes a big difference in my opinion if you like the messy look!  Two great affordable options are the Charles Worthington Volume and Bounce Texturising Spray and the Fudge URBAN Texture Spray.
